If you assume many of the discounts and special offers available to older people are limited to pensioners or low-income people, think again. Many cut in at age 60… and could save you hundreds of pounds a year.
Saving money for your retirement can be a lot easier if you can cut the cost of some vital outgoings. And between them, this little lot could save you hundreds or even thousands of pounds each year.
Health & Wellbeing
Our reliance on regular medications rises steeply as we age: by the time you hit 60, there’s a three in four chance you will be on a regular prescription.
At almost £10 a pop, that can add a lot to your regular outgoings; but if you live in England, you stop paying for prescriptions the day you turn 60. If you reside in Wales or Scotland, of course, they are free at any age.
From age 60, you are also entitled to free annual NHS sight tests anywhere in the UK – helpful as, by that age, there’s a four in five chance you will be wearing specs.
And if you DO need a new pair, some big-name retailers offer 20% off glasses.
Travel & Transport
Sadly, filling up your car doesn’t get any cheaper as you get older, but taking public transport certainly does.
The free bus pass that everyone will rub you about is, in most parts of the country, restricted to State Pension Age, but there are some parts of the UK where 60 does apply: check your local council website.
And if you live in London, you can get a TfL 60+ London Oyster Photocard for free off-peak travel on buses, tubes, and trams.
If you take more than one or two train journeys a year, the National Rail Senior Railcard is a snip at £35 a year (or £80 for three years) by giving you one third off standard and first-class rail fares. National Express meanwhile, offer similar discounts for the princely sum of £15 a year with their Senior Coachcard.
Health & Fitness
There was a time when 60 was the magic benchmark age for discounted memberships and entrance fees for council-run gyms. That has changed in some, but not all areas, making it worthwhile checking if you could benefit. Privately-owned health and fitness clubs tend to be slightly less generous, but it is still worth shopping around.
Retail and dining out
If you have an Iceland near you, they and The Food Warehouse offer a 10% discount every Tuesday to anyone over 60 with no minimum spend (valid ID and a Bonus Card are required).
Equally, you’ll find that some pub chains, offer smaller-priced senior menus or daytime deals.
Leisure & Entertainment
If you’re happy to take in a movie during the afternoon rather than the evening (great if you are entertaining grandchildren!), major chains including Odeon run “Silver Cinema” daytime screenings – starting at just £3.50.
The National Theatre offers up to £20 off selected tickets for midweek matinees to over-60s.
Many museums and art galleries offer senior concessions on exhibitions, while the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) offers a significant lifetime membership discount starting at 60.
And, if you have been a member of the National Trust for at least three consecutive years, you can request a 25% discount on your membership once you hit 60.
Are YOUR investments balanced for a secure retirement?
Investment values can sometimes fall as well as rise… and certainly some assets can underperform or be subject to shifts in market sentiment.
Whatever assets you have tucked away in your portfolio, it’s always worth conducting a regular healthcheck to make sure they are still on the right trajectory to deliver the retirement you have been hoping for.
Going into your RetireEasy LifePlan regularly allows you to keep a constant eye on how shifts in market values, inflation, and other factors are playing into the equation – and giving you plenty of time to make adjustments if needed to how and where your hard-earned savings are invested.
You can even run specific scenarios to determine what impact any future changes might make to your plans – including delaying or taking early retirement, downsizing, receiving an inheritance or needing to pay for care.
And all for just a few pounds a month!
